You really did not need to redo all the reports!
1) It does not matter if you choose 'Current Connection' or establish a 'New connection' from the Database Expert. The Current Connection is just a history of the connections you've made and it lets you quickly connect to an already 'in-use' connection
2) You could have still used the 'Set datasource Location' to change the Tables to Command Objects. Here's how:
- Go to the Set Datasource Location option > In the 'Replace with' pane select the Connection Name and then just select 'Add Command' and hit the 'Update' button.
- This will bring up the Command Window where you can type in the SQL Query.
If this doesn't work, it could be down to the fact that CR XI does not support this. This does work in CR XI R2 SP6 though.
Anyway, although it was a little laborious, I'm glad you were able to fix it.
